Colton Area Museum presents “History of the Gold Prospecting”
2 min readOn Saturday, May 1, at 2:30 p.m., the Colton Area Museum’s (CAM) guest speaker program will feature Jim Strohm, local historian and well-known authority on gold prospecting. With many stories to share and background information to fill our curiosity, Strohm will guide us through gold prospecting history, and explain the types of gold, as well as demonstrate how to pan for gold.
Since 1964 Strohm has been interested in gold prospecting, when as a 9-year-old, his parents took him to Knott’s Berry Farm to “pound” for gold, and soon discovered he had “Gold Fever.” His enthusiasm continued through high school when he acquired several pieces of gold prospecting equipment, including his now famous gold prospecting pan. Once he was experienced enough to demonstrate his technique, and speak at public events, Strohm became a member of the Gold Prospectors Association of America, and has now become one of the most sought-after presenters on gold prospecting.
Community residents and visitors alike are invited to attend this exciting event on May 11, 2019 at 2:30pm. The Colton Area Museum offers an interesting slate of guest speakers throughout the year. They represent a wide variety of perspectives and experiences that are not only informative, but inspirational for those who want to know more about Colton’s History – past, present, and future.
The CAM will also be open that day, Saturday, May 11, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. providing the opportunity to see the many outstanding displays of Colton history, and the newly opened Earp-Traintown Museum. The CAM address is 380 N. La Cadena Drive in Colton. Regular CAM hours are Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00pm-4:00pm, and on Saturdays 11:00am-2:00pm. For more information about the museum and it programs, contact the museum at 824-8814, or Dr. G at 213-3730.
